Aspinall St Reserve - Ecology Walk & Talk
Description
Join Biolinks Alliance and City of Bendigo reserve managers for a free 'walk and talk' forest tour of the public nature reserve at Aspinall St Golden Square.
Learn about the site, the ecology and history of the Central Goldfields Box-Ironbark forest, local environmental issues stemming from mining and post-Colonial activities, and what is being done to restore these forests to health for future generations.
The tour will be led by a Biolinks Alliance ecologist and will provide an overview of the flora and fauna found at the reserve, along with a bird monitoring demonstration showing how we track the different species present and their change over time.
Participants will learn about the current management challenges for this type of bushland and the practices being used to manage and restore this site. to create a thriving forest that provides habitat for native wildlife, manages water flow to reduce flooding and soaks up carbon into its lush canopy.
After the walk and talk, we will finish the day with a cuppa - our friendly team will be on hand and happy to answer any questions.
All welcome and no prior knowledge is required. This is a family-friendly event and children are welcome although the tour is not specifically designed with young children in mind.
This event is part of the Goldfields Forest Restoration Project, led by Biolinks Alliance with funding generously provided by the Ian Potter Foundation.

- What do I need to wear or bring?
Just bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and wear appropriate clothing for the weather, with sturdy closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground among sticks and other debris.
- What if I don't even know what a Box-Ironbark forest is?
Perfect! We're here to learn, so anyone from seasoned ecology veterans to interested residents with no knowledge at all is very welcome.
- How do I get there?
There is parking available in Norelle Cres and McCarthy Drive, close to the meeting point. Entry to the reserve is via Norelle Crescent. The meeting point is at the end of the cul-de-sac, adjoining the reserve as shown on the map below.
Signage will be in place on the day to direct you.
Make sure you allow some extra time to find the meeting point - after a short introduction the walking tour will depart at 1:15 pm.
- What if I can no longer attend?
If you register and can no longer make it, that's absolute fine - but as we have capped numbers, we kindly request that you refund your ticket so your place is available to others.
How to refund a ticket:
