AusSORA Explained in 20 Minutes (Online)

In May'26 CASA changed how Australian drone operations are assessed and brought as an excellent new and adapted framework that fits better to Australia's context!

BVLOS and other complex operations are now assessed under AusSORA — Advisory Circular 101-06. CASA adapted the JARUS SORA 2.5., and did a remarkable work in providing an easier, and adapted framework to Australia's context. Many will be familiar with it, if they have done a SORA prior - BUT there are quite a few changes that are inside, which you need to know... Sadly parts that CASA changed, are exactly those parts, which will change your SAIL, thus it's good to know about those. You also need some good tools to get your application right and adapted to the AusSORA framework.

In this 20 minute session, we present what AusSORA actually is, the parts that changed, and the parts that impact your SAIL. We will walk through a practical example with our AEROphoria mission planning software live on screen on some example mission plan. We are opened for a Q&A session thereafter.

What do we present?

• Very brief AusSORA introduction: what is SORA, JAURUS, SAIL, and AusSORA and why it's important

• AusSORA and it's changes in plain language: e.g. remote areas with under 0.5 people / km2 - note, this is most of Australia!

• Live walkthrough through AEROphoria's AusSORA tool: draw a mission, measure population, detect airspaces, find mitigations, determine SAIL

• Limitations: what AEROphoria can do, and what it can't for compliancy

• Q&A: we try to answer your questions, however, we definitely aren't CASA and can only share our perspective

However, while we are able to EXPLAIN you the key changes of AusSORA in 20 minutes - we sadly won't be able to provide you with a tool that does it in 20 minutes...

Do I need to come prepared?

Basically no. There is no need to prepare anything. An account with www.aerophoria.com would be useful although, that you can familiarise yourself with the software environment. If you should not have done already, it's strongly advised to have a read-through CASA's AC 101-06 if you should not have done so before.
