Australian Federal Election - Multicultural Reporting Excellence Masterclass (MREx) for Journalists and Media Professionals
Event description
Rationale for the MREx Masterclass
In the lead-up to Australia's 2025 federal election, media organizations face a critical challenge: accurately representing and engaging with Australia's diverse multicultural communities. Our intensive workshop provides journalists and media professionals with essential cultural intelligence, community connections, and reporting frameworks that will significantly enhance election coverage quality.
Australian newsrooms remain significantly less diverse than the communities they cover:
- Only 16% of senior editorial leaders come from non-Anglo backgrounds
- According to Census 2021, only about 9% of journalists are from a non-Anglo or non-European background.
- According to the “Valuing diversity in news and newsrooms” report, only 39% of journalists received training on how to cover issues of diversity in the past year
The result? Coverage that misses nuance, reinforces stereotypes, and fails to capture the authentic concerns of multicultural communities.
