The Talloires Network Leaders Conference (TNLC2021) is a global movement-building event for universities and the community sector to critically reflect on the power and responsibility of engaged universities to work together - and in partnership with communities - to sustainably and equitably address global challenges.

Due to the time difference (TNLC2021 is being hosted in Boston, United States), on Friday 1 October the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is hosting an online event hub for Australian universities.

These free online livestreams are open to universities nationally, including staff, students, and their community partners. We invite you to join us for all, or any part, of our full day online conference.

9.00am - 9.45am | Opening Session: Introduction to the Network for Community Engagement and Carnegie Classification Australia

The opening panel will cross live to TNLC21 to join international colleagues as we launch the ‘Network for Community Engagement and Carnegie Classification Australia.’ The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, long considered the international gold standard for demonstrating university-community engagement, will offer Australian universities an international platform to celebrate and share good practice from across the sector. The Network is also launching a collaboratively designed Community of Practice around engaged scholarship for universities and their partners.

Speakers: Aunty Glendra Stubbs (UTS Elder in Residence), Dr Mathew Johnson (President, Albion College), Joanne Curry (Vice-President External Engagement, Simon Fraser University), Prof John Saltmarsh (Professor, Higher Education, University of Massachusetts).

10.00am - 11.15am | How to do it right? Community-engaged learning, work-integrated learning, and engaged scholarship in Australia

Universities, government, and the social sector have a long history of contributing to the public good. When they come together in collaboration, their impact and effectiveness are magnified. Together, they gain real traction to resolve complex societal challenges. This panel will discuss the role of each sector in building impact, the challenges they face, and the importance of cross-sector partnerships.

Speakers: Jihad Dib MP (Member for Lakemba), Cassandra Goldie (CEO, ACOSS), Prof James Arvanitakis (Executive Director, Australian American Fulbright Commission), facilitated by Verity Firth (Executive Director, Social Justice, UTS).

11.30am-1.00pm | Engagement approaches: Case studies

GroundUp: Collaborating and participating in the collective life of places with First Nations communities
Speakers: Michaela Spencer and Michael Christie (Contemporary Indigenous Knowledge and Governance, Charles Darwin University), facilitated by Nareen Young (Industry Professor for Indigenous Policy, UTS).

Engaged scholarship and open access publishing
Speakers: Margaret Malone (Managing Editor, Gateways Journal), Scott Abbott (Scholarly Communication Manager, UTS), Dr. Laura Nkula-Wenz (Lecturer, African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town).

This interactive online workshop will develop your capacity to be an inclusive leader, create an inclusive environment for university-community connections, and build reciprocal partnerships. Facilitated by the Centre for Inclusive Design and Leaders for Good.
