Australian Philanthropy's Pledge - Part 1

Philanthropy has a central role to play in supporting our communities and not-for-profit sector through difficult times, and the commitment of the philanthropic sector to step up and provide ongoing, strategic and meaningful support at this time, is unequivocal.
In March, we launched Australian Philanthropy’s Response to the COVID-19 Crisis, a public statement outlining eleven key principles for philanthropic funders to adapt within their own funding context to support grantees and partners. More than 50 funders signed onto the initial public statement, and the growing number of signatories highlights Australian philanthropy’s commitment to the not-for-profit sector and organisations doing important work in our communities in the face of adversity.
Moderated by Sarah Davies AM, this two-part webinar* brings together a cross section of philanthropic leaders to share how they enacted the pledge and reflect on the challenges, lessons and opportunities – both immediate and longer term – to adapt practice.

Sarah Davies AM is the CEO of Philanthropy Australia. Philanthropy Australia’s purpose is to champion, enable and support the growth and evolution of philanthropy throughout Australian society – in simple terms, to foster and achieve more and better philanthropy. It is the peak body and membership organisation for all individuals and organisations who are engaged, or want to be, in planned and thoughtful giving to bring about effective, positive social and community change.
Panellists:
Bill Mithen is Chief Executive Officer at Give Where You Live Foundation, a role he has held for eight years. Prior to this he was the Australian Operations Director at Save the Children Australia. He is also currently Chair of the G21 Geelong Region Alliance, a Director of the G-Force Group of Companies and a member of the Barwon Regional Partnership.
Bill’s roles in the community and development sectors have seen him lead and oversee programs that have supported some of Australia’s most vulnerable communities. Programs that focused on child protection health and education as well as intensive parenting support. In his current role he helps lead a unique, place-based program to address entrenched disadvantage in the Barwon region that uses collective impact and catalytic philanthropy frameworks.
Jackie Coates is Head of Telstra Foundation. Jackie is a corporate sustainability leader, passionate about the intersection of social innovation and digital technology. As the Head of the Telstra Foundation in Australia and Board Trustee of the Telstra Foundation Philippines, she manages a large philanthropic social innovation investment fund with a focus on technology for humanity. Strategic and entrepreneurial, Jackie’s work supports digital change makers in the non-profit sector, as well as young digital makers in remote and regional Australia. She advocates for the responsible and inclusive development of new and emerging technologies and encourages young people to create with, not just consume, tech. Feminist, mother, tech optimist, and grant-maker, Jackie juggle many balls and tries hard not to drop the glass ones.
Jo Taylor is Chief Capabilities Officer at the Paul Ramsay Foundation. Over the past 20+ years Jo has worked in the UK and Australia leading philanthropic foundations for families, corporations and government departments. Jo loves working on knotty problems and working with people with differing and diverse experience in the hope of creating a more equitable, thriving Australia. Jo joined the Paul Ramsay Foundation in 2016 as General Manager for Operations, responsible for supporting and working with investments and partners to flex and shift systems to create better outcomes. Jo’s expertise in working alongside communities, evidence and learning, funding and systems has been invaluable. Jo is now Chief Capability Officer, leading a new portfolio of work for the Foundation that seeks to build the capability of people, organisations and communities. She is also Chair of the taskforce set up by the Foundation to support our partners through COVID-19.
