Autumn in Langholm - A Town-Edge Ecology Experience

What can a landscape tell you if you know how to read it? Join Luonto Living for a guided experience exploring the changing landscape at the edge of Langholm. As we leave the town behind, we’ll look at the subtle transitions between different habitats and land uses — from the built environment to grazing land, woodland edges and open countryside.

We’ll explore how vegetation changes between these spaces, what those changes can tell us about the conditions of a place, and how grazing and other human activity help shape the landscape around us.Rather than simply walking through the countryside, we’ll slow down and look more closely at the relationships between people, plants, animals and place.

Autumn gives us plenty to notice, from changing vegetation and seasonal colour to the ways different habitats meet and overlap.This is a relaxed, small-group experience with plenty of time to stop, look and ask questions. You don’t need any previous knowledge of ecology or geography — just curiosity and suitable outdoor clothing.

And because this is a Finnish-inspired nature event, there will of courseb time for a hospitality break with a choice tea or coffee and a homemade cinnamon bun. ☕️

What to expect:

• Around 1½–2 hours outdoors

• A relaxed pace with regular stops

• Town-edge, grazing and woodland-edge landscapes

• An introduction to ecology, land use and landscape interpretation

• Coffee and a homemade cinnamon bun

Please bring: Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for Scottish autumn weather. Dogs are welcome if well behaved and kept under control.
