Food

The surrounding neighbourhood is a foodies paradise, with a wide array of local warungs; Made's Kopi is an excellent coffee bar across the lane, within short walks through the rice paddies there are health food cafes, all nationalities of cuisine and fancy restaurants to suit every taste. Unlike most of our retreats, this one is not strictly vegetarian - you can choose what suits you best.

For the first night we will indulge in the incredible views and delectable plant-based delights of Zest - an ideal introduction to what is possible in the modern Bali food landscape.

Following your morning yoga and meditation practice, a generous brunch will be served in the onsite restaurant including toast, eggs, fruit, tea, coffee, juice, and your choice of Indian/Indonesian/Western options.

We will provide a mudmap of the village showing where our favourite places for lunch and dinner are. Try the Elephant for valley views and veggie delights, or Alchemy for health food done right. Yellow Flower is possibly our idea of utopia, their nasi campur is a perennial favourite and they also do excellent chai. Wander the laneways and see what appeals, you will surely uncover a hidden gem. At the end of the path, down the famous Penestenan stairs you are within walking distance of central Ubud. Cheap, plentiful, fresh, and nourishing food options are at your fingertips.

Walking

Expect to walk a lot and be mindful - while the retreat venue is not on a busy road, the laneway is used by buggies, scooters, dogs, ducks, and more. Surfaces can be uneven and somewhat rustic. You will need a moderate level of fitness to walk comfortably in the hilly neighbourhood, although it is always acceptable to slow down to Bali time.

Weather

Bali is hot and humid all year around. In October it is the end of the dry season and rain is always a possibility, especially in the evenings. Expect high 20s/low 30s temperatures. Your villa is airconditioned and the pool is a welcome refresher.

Travel Tips

Book a direct flight to Denpasar and let us know your expected arrival time. A driver can be arranged so you have someone waiting with your name on a sign at the airport (expect to pay around IDR450K/AUD$45 and take approximately 2 hours drive to get to Ubud). Things change frequently however we recommend doing your Visa on Arrival online - more information will be provided in the leadup. If you are not familiar with travelling in SE Asia, rest assured it is increasingly simple and we will guide you through each step.

Staying On

The retreat will allow you to get your bearings in Ubud, and will be an ideal way to start your holiday, if you choose to stay on. We are intending to stay for the Ubud Writers and Readers festival. Our villa is in an ideal location to walk to festival events, and we invite you to also stay if books and storytellers appeal to you. At the time of writing, the 2025 UWRF festival dates have not yet been announced. We will communicate more as soon as we know more.
