Mon, 30 Nov, 9:30am - 11:45am AEST

Description

Join the Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association (AWGSA) for a special hybrid event featuring award-winning journalist, femicide researcher, and founder of Australian Femicide Watch and the RED HEART MOVEMENT, Sherele Moody. In her talk, What Femicides Reveal About the Systems Failing Women and Children, Sherele will reflect on her work documenting femicides and child deaths in Australia and explore what these stories reveal about systemic failures, public accountability, and pathways for change. The presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion with Associate Professor Juliet Watson (RMIT University).

Participants can attend in person at the Ship Inn, South Bank, Meanjin-Brisbane, join a free in person watch party in Naarm-Melbourne (Deakin Downtown) or join online.

Following the public event, AWGSA members are invited to participate in the online AGM and everyone attending in person in Meanjin-Brisbane is welcome to register for an afternoon NTRO workshop led by Dr Kate Kirby and Professor Deanna Grant-Smith.

Talk Abstract:

The very personal reason I document femicides and child deaths. How the count comes together and what documenting their deaths reveals about the failures in the safety systems; how maintaining their stories in the public sphere is a catalyst for change; understanding how policy-makers and leaders need to move forward to ensure lives are saved; acknowledging the bravery of femicide families; and the small activisms driving change.
