Event description

This coming 12th of August we’ll be screening both ‘Dream of Silk’ and ‘I For Iran’ as a Liberation Cinema double-feature.

Director Sanaz Azari returns to her secondary all-girls school, 25 years later to conduct interviews with the adolescents in attendance. Observing and listening to them in the classrooms, school yard, stairwells. Paying each student before the camera undivided attention – in return they surprise, endear, and revile up a stirring admissions of themselves; their imagined selves and place within Iranian society. Post revolution Tehran, in the attitude of the teenagers, is a city vailed in its history, cloaking the possibilities teeming beneath. Throughout the film, the students throw out remarks that are in essence revolutionary in their portent, teasing those possibilities to the surface.

And from a more weary and perspective; a tutor guides ‘I for Iran’ director Sanza Azari through a series of reading and writing lessons in her mother tongue Persian, with the use of a textbook dating back to the 1978 revolution of Iran. Azari’s tutor is filled with poetic discontent and misgiving towards the series of events following the overthrow of the Shah and rise of Supreme Leader Khomeini. Throughout the film is a tapping into the figurative notions within the Persian Language and pondering on the potentiality loss in the Islamic revolutions’ fervour, speed and terraformation of Iranian society.
