Bach and Vivaldi
Event description
Bach and Vivaldi
Liturgical texts enlivened with dance-like energy. Two masters of the baroque style in one concert.
Long lost but re-discovered in the twentieth century, this vibrant Gloria is the pinnacle of Vivaldi’s choral output, a celebrated standard in today’s repertoire. And the cantata Christ lag in Todes Banden reveals a JS Bach in his early twenties bringing extraordinary complexity and invention to the established formulas of his day.
The extensively refurbished organ at St Jude’s Church also features prominently in the performance. Young Sydney organist Sam Giddy, who has been making a name for himself in recent international competition, will play some of Bach’s transcriptions of violin concertos from Vivaldi’s set titled L’estro armónico as well as accompanying the choir.
Berrima Singers invites you to enjoy a glorious afternoon of choral and organ music directed by Dr Carlos Alvarado.
