Back Pain: Beyond Anatomy – Ayurvedic Perspectives on Spinal Health

Back pain is rarely “just a disc” or “just a muscle.” Ayurveda invites us to look beyond single tissues and consider functional patterns—dosha balance (especially Vata), tissue integrity (“Dhatu”), channels (“Srotas”), digestive/metabolic fire (“Agni”), and accumulation of metabolic residue (“Ama”). In this webinar Dr Ajit will outline an integrative framework for assessing common back-pain presentations, linking history and lifestyle factors with practical interventions: daily routines to stabilise Vata, food strategies to reduce Ama and support Agni, appropriate oils and external therapies such as the particularly effective Ayurvedic “Kati-Basti” therapy (a herbal/bodywork procedure).

Dr. S. Ajit Singh (B.A.M.S., P.C.A.S) is one of the most experienced and respected Ayurvedic physicians in Australasia, with over 43 years of continuous clinical, teaching, and regulatory experience in both India and the West. He graduated as an Ayurvedacharya with a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the Government Ayurvedic Medical College, Patiala (Punjabi University), and holds a civil service award (P.C.A.S.) from India.

Dr. Ajit served for nearly two decades with the Government of India as an Ayurvedic Medical Officer, Panchakarma specialist, lecturer, and Ayurvedic pharmacy inspector, working to uphold traditional standards of practice and medicine manufacturing. In 1996, he relocated to New Zealand with a vision to establish authentic Ayurveda in the Western world.

He is the founder and director of Planet Ayurveda and Ayurda Wellness, and established the Australasian Institute of Ayurvedic Studies (AIAS) in 1999—now one of the most comprehensive and accredited centres for Ayurvedic education outside India. Dr. Ajit is also the founding patron of the Australasian Ayurvedic Practitioners Association and President/CEO of the International Council of Ayurvedic Medicine, working globally to standardise education and professional practice.

His contributions have been recognised with multiple honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Zealand health sector, for pioneering and advancing Ayurveda in Australasia.
