Academy of Artisan Skills Workshop Series 2025
Join acclaimed Textile Artist Cassi Jo Davis for an intensive one day workshop where you will learn how to construct your own costume for the Balingup Medieval Carnivale.
Participants will learn about the history and styles of Medieval Clothing and taking inspiration from the past, learn from Cassi her textile and wearable art techniques of recutting, painting, printing, applique, hand and machine embroidery to upcycle a modern day exisiting garment.
We will be learning about the devastating effects of fast fashion and how we can imaginatively make wearable art from unwanted garments. Cassi has been collecting textiles for over 20 years and is bringing a collection of beautiful remnants, laces, braids, embellishments for us to use on our costume. All materials are supplied for this workshop.
You will need to bring an existing garment that fits you. This could be a previous costume you want to revamp, an opshop dress, an old ball gown, a corset bodice, a vest, jacket or a cape.
If you have a sewing machine, you are also welcome to bring it so you don’t have to share. Some basic sewing skills are preferable but not essential.
If you have any textiles that you want to use on your costume, such as a found tapestry, or a piece of fabric you love and want to base your costume around please bring that too.
Please bring your own snacks and lunch for the day, or support the wonderful local cafes.
