Basic Audio Editing: Using Audacity with Maddy

If you're a podcast nerd, you might wonder about how these are made, and the minimum tools and equipment needed.
If you're a music fan, you might be curious about how to integrate music into other projects, like a seamless playlist.
If you're just interested in learning something new, there's so much you can do with audio editing!

Maddy is a musician, DJ and a long-time community radio broadcaster and trainer. She has spent HOURS editing audio to go on air, particularly interviews with Australian musicians, but also for audio documentaries and podcasts.

While there are heaps of tools and programs out there, Maddy prefers to keeps things simple and uses a free, basic program called Audacity. 

Learning audio editing in a basic program will help you understand fundamental functions and possibilities, so you have choice in how you put them to use them. (Sometimes learning with a whizz bang program can a bit like applying instagram filters without knowing how to editing an image manually).

So come along and give it a go! 

What will we cover?

In this hands on class, we will explore different functions of audio editing, and how they are achieve in the program Audacity, such as:

  • Importing files and settings
  • Cutting, pasting and moving audio
  • Single track and multi-track projects
  • Recording audio
  • Layering with music
  • Noise reduction
  • Simple editing tasks and prompts to pracitce with
  • There will be lots of opportunity to ask questions!

    What will I need to bring?

    If you want to follow along and try out Audacity during class, please bring a laptop, charger and headphones.
    Audacity is free and works on both Macs and PCs. You can download it here for macOS and her for Windows ahead of class.


    Who will be Teaching?

    Maddy (she/her) is a crafty hobbyist based in Narrm who has a big heart for colour, expression and over-the-top jewellery. She enjoys working with all sorts of materials and mediums, and repurposing everyday items into expressions of art and fashion. As a musician, these wonky and not-so-wonky creations often find their way onto stages around Melbourne.

    Maddy has also a radio broadcaster and DJ in Melbourne for over 15 years, hosting an Australian music program on PBSfm and spinning records around bars around town.
