Basic Ecology & Bushland Management Course

Do you already work in the environment but have never had the opportunity to learn the basics about eco-systems and how they function? This course is for you! Ideal for Bushcare/Landcare volunteers, uni or high school students thinking of entering the fields of bush regeneration or horticulture, or anyone interested in learning about our natural world.
Sponsored by Port Stephens Council and delivered by Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, this is a FREE 6-week course designed for adults as an introduction to ecology. It will give a basic understanding of how eco-systems work and of their many components.
Week 1 - basic introduction to ecology, biodiversity, habitats, eco-systems
Week 2 - basic geology and soils and how vital they are as a key to any habitat
Week 3 - basic botany and an introduction to plants
Week 4 - fauna, in all their forms!
Week 5 - aspects of bushland management
Week 6 - propagation and conservation
Following the course, there will be 2 weeks available for students to pass on some of what they have learned as a 'community commitment'. These projects will be put together by the student with assistance from the Project Co-ordinator. There will also be a certificate issued on Botanic Gardens Day - 25th May 2025
This is an exciting adventure into nature and will be held at Hunter Region Botanic Gardens (Heatherbrae) and will be run be experienced facilitators.
