Event description

Join Silja Leskinen (Muddy Hands Project) for a hands-on workshop designed to connect young people aged 13 to 17 years with the timeless tradition of weaving. Spend the day crafting, learning, and exploring the world of natural fibres in this Basket Weaving and Fibre Craft Day.

Whether participants are new to weaving or have tried it before, this workshop will give them the chance to work with raffia and locally harvested materials to create their own small basket, while learning techniques that can be applied to a variety of other crafts like hats, mats, and shoes. It's not just about weaving practical and beautiful items — it's about gaining an appreciation for the natural world and understanding that things we need for daily life come from the environment.

What to expect:

  • Learn the Coil Weave Technique: Discover this ancient technique that can be used for crafting baskets, hats, mats, shoes, and more.
  • Harvest Materials from the Farm: Collect local resources and learn how to "see" and gather materials in your neighbourhood.
  • Process Banana Fibre: Experience the process of turning raw materials into usable crafting fibre.
  • Create Natural Cordage: Learn how to make cordage from fibre, a skill that can be used for everything from fishing nets to shelter building.
  • Discussion on Local Making and Sustainability: Engage in a thoughtful conversation about the impact of creating locally, using abundant or "weed" species, and reducing environmental footprints by avoiding transportation.

About the Facilitator:

Silja Leskinen’s journey into basket weaving and natural fibre crafting began with wilderness survival skills, where she learned to create a variety of items using raw materials from nature. From baskets to fishing nets, and even shelter building, Silja has gained a deep appreciation for what nature provides and how to use it creatively. Over the years, she has honed her weaving techniques and now shares her skills with others through workshops. Silja is also a skilled wood carver, and all her creations can be found at her stall at the NSCF markets.

What to bring:

  • Lunch and snacks (No fridge or microwave facilities are available on-site)
  • Hat
  • Insect repellent and Sunscreen
  • Wet weather gear (only if wet weather)
  • Water Bottle
