Beachcomber Biodiversity and Coastal Ecology
Event description
Beachcomber Biodiversity and Coastal Ecology Excursion with Yoav Bar-Ness
Want to identify some of the seashells on the beach? Want to learn about the geology of Hobart's coastal cliffs? Let's have an easy wander along the rugged Derwent coastline of Southern Tasmania and do both! We'll meet at Hobart's Kingston Beach, just a short bus ride or fifteen minute drive south of Hobart. Map in hand, we'll look at the qualities of the varied beaches in SE Tasmania, and then conduct some quick coastal seashell surveys of what's been washed ashore. We'll also climb up onto the headland trails and observe some of the dramatic sedimentary cliffsides that guard the edges of the beach. Low tide is at 6:45am, and high tide is at 1:45pm.
Participants will learn about beach geomorphology, seashell biodiversity, tide and salinity, sedimentary geology, and maybe some cloudspotting as a bonus.
We’ll take a break during the tour to have lunch. Please pack your own food and water, and wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes. Bring binoculars and a telephoto camera if available. We will be slowly walking on the beach and on easy trails totalling about 4 km, beginning and returning to the cafe strip at Kingston Beach.      ÂA Seat at the Table
