Event description

Attention Sydney dancers – it’s time to bring your A-game!

Beat Breakdown is back with a brand-new season of 1v1 dance battles, featuring a mix of styles and some serious talent, all happening on the Darling Harbour dance floor from August 28 to September 25.

Whether you’re a master at krumping, Hip Hop, Locking, or Vogue, this is your chance to showcase your skills, win incredible prizes and impress the crowd.

What to expect:
Beat Breakdown is an open battle format with up to 32 spots available each week. Signing up to compete is totally free as well as coming along to watch. Grab your crew and bring your best moves - we've got you covered.

Dance styles:
Every week will feature a different style. Tonight is Locking and Vogue.

Locking - was created by Don “Campbellock,” in Los Angeles, California in the late 1960s. Known for its energetic and playful movements, quick & sharp precision movements, and emotive facial expressions - it is often performed to funk music with upbeat tempo and funky bass lines. One of the key elements of Locking is the “lock,” which involves freezing in a specific position for a brief moment before continuing with the dance.

Afrobeats - In the 70s, African beats were hugely influenced by the works of Ghanaian Afro-rock band Osibisa and the Nigerian Afro-beat star Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Now Afrobeats music is the new intentional wave of virulent music reaching outside of the continent and into the rest of the world. Sarkodie, FuseODG, Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Mr. Eazi, Olamide, and also DJ Abrantie have played a huge role in Afro-beats. As Afrobeats swells, afro-dance cannot be sidelined. The two go hand in hand, and true global conquest can be accomplished when the two factions operate seamlessly with each other. West Africans have always had a culture of rhythms and moves, hence why the new breed of Afro-dancers on the ground in Ghana are burgeoning and blooming on the international scene with their dance moves through social media.

The top two performers of each category will move on to the final Beat Breakdown to take their shot at the All Star Battle on September 25.
