Beating the odds: Problem gambling in our youth
Event description
Despite a growing body of evidence, there remains a perception that problem gambling is the reserve of electronic gaming machines, or ‘pokies’.
Recent research by Senior Research Fellow Dr Vincent Mancini found that young men who participate in sports and fantasy sports gambling are at a higher risk of developing problem gambling behaviours, challenging the pokies narrative.
Dr Mancini’s paper, which used data from Australia’s most extensive and longest-running study on male health, the Ten to Men Study, highlighted the generational differences in gambling behaviours.
In this webinar, our panel will discuss the changing face of gambling behaviour in our society, and the steps being taken to help young people in Australia beat the odds.
MP Kate Chaney, also a member of the Murphy inquiry, will discuss the report’s findings, and efforts to implement its recommendations. Dr Mancini will share details of his research and explain the wide-reaching impacts of gambling advertising on the community. Movember Institute Research Fellow Dr Krista Fisher will outline initiatives aimed at supporting young men in the face of problem gambling behaviour. A young person with lived experience will share their personal story before we close with a Q+A.
Dr Mancini's research received funding from Embrace at The Kids.
