Beginner Rope Course • October - November
Description
Welcome to Jute Institute - Begginer Rope Course
Curious about rope but not sure where to start? This four-week beginner course is designed to build a strong foundation in shibari through a balance of safety, communication, and technique.
This course is ideal for complete beginners or anyone looking to strengthen their fundamentals.
No prior experience is required, and all ties are taught progressively in a supportive, inclusive environment with plenty of time for guided practice and feedback.
Across four weekly sessions, you'll learn the essential skills needed to approach rope with confidence. We'll cover consent and negotiation, risk awareness, rope handling and care, anatomy for safer tying, and clear communication before, during, and after a scene.
Practical skills include single column ties, structural principles, basic cuffs, and foundational floor ties, with an emphasis on understanding why techniques work, not just how to tie them.
One course ticket covers one rigger for all four weeks of the course (and a tying partner).
Access to the course includes free entry to our weekly rope jams (Thursdays 7pm-late) for the duration of the 4 weeks, so you can come and practice, meet people and mingle.
What do I wear?
Whatever you're comfortable tying/being tied in. Clothing that you'd generally wear to an exercise class is fine.
Should I bring anything?
Bring your ropes (if you have any), safety shears, gear, a notebook, some writing implements and any comfort items you'd like. Class rope is available for use if needed. We'd recommend having at least 4 x 8m hanks, and 2 x 4m hanks in your kit.
Do I need a partner?
This course can be completed solo, so the choice is yours. If your focus is partnered tying, we'd recommend bringing a partner with you.
The space is accessible, there are bathrooms and kitchenette facilities available.
Class Schedule:

Meet your instructor:
J, (she/her) switch.
First finding rope in 2020 she has learnt from inspiring riggers both overseas and around the country.
She is a lover of rope wisdom nuggets, collecting inspiration from a variety of styles, practitioners and schools.
J is drawn to the blend of aesthetics and energetic exchange within rope & has an eye for ties that transmit "wilted flower" in her mind.
She believes that rope is so many more things than it's often assumed to be when telling people she practices it. And that each person with their own history, needs and desires can create their own path for play.
