Beginner Trap Training with Whakatipu Wildlife Trust
Event description
Join the Whakatipu Wildlife Trust (WWT) and Queenstown Library for a Beginner Trap Training Session and learn how to protect our native creatures!
Whakatipu Wildlife Trust's focus is on setting up and maintaining predator traplines to target possums, ferrets, stoats, weasels, rats, hedgehogs in the Whakatipu Basin. These animals are all introduced by humans to NZ, and predate on our native birds, lizards and insects who have not evolved defences to these types of predators. These efforts are part of the Predator Free 2050 mission.
The traplines are all close to various Whakatipu communities and are looked after by volunteers, who are everyday people that love the outdoors and our native wildlife.
This free session will cover the predators that are being targeted by WWT, the different traps that can be used, how to use the Trap NZ app to record your catches, and hands-on practice of safe operation of the traps. If you are keen to get trapping, you can then be signed up with a trapping group.
Once trained, you can join a local trapping group at a level that suits your lifestyle, whether that’s weekly, monthly or every so often. Volunteering is flexible and a great way to get outdoors while giving back to our environment.
Join us on Saturday 11 October, 2.00-3.30pm at Queenstown Library, 10 Gorge Rd.
