Being a Good Employer: A Governance Workshop for Environmental Groups

Are you on the board of a community environmental organisation that employs staff?

If you’re a volunteer board member juggling governance responsibilities and employer duties, this practical workshop is for you.

We’ll unpack what it means to be a good employer from the board table – especially when you’re a volunteer yourself. You’ll get a solid grounding in the essentials of New Zealand employment law, and gain confidence in navigating the responsibilities that come with hiring and supporting staff.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Understand your legal obligations as an employer

  • Set up clear roles and delegations between governance and management

  • Support staff wellbeing while maintaining boundaries

  • Avoid common pitfalls around contracts, performance, and complaints

  • Build a positive workplace culture through good governance

This is a hands-on session with real-life examples, useful templates, and time for questions. Whether you’ve just taken on an employer role, or want to sharpen your board’s employment practices, you’ll walk away better equipped to lead well and support your team.

No legal jargon, just plain-language advice and practical tools for community-led organisations.

On Zoom Tuesday July 1; 6.15 to 7.45pm
