Drawing with Trees
Event description
Drawing with Trees – An Immersive Art and Nature Workshop with Rochelle Summerfield
Location: Banyula Conservation Reserve
Date: Sunday June TBC
Time: 10am - 3pm
Cost: $80
Spend a day immersed in creativity and nature with exhibiting artist and experienced art educator Rochelle Summerfield, whose practice explores the deep interconnections between rivers, trees, and place. To find out more about Rochelle's over thirty years of experience as an artist and arts educator, see her Website, and her About Page.
Set in the heart of the beautiful Banyula Conservation Reserve, this one-day workshop is designed to awaken your senses and inspire new ways of seeing and drawing. Rochelle will share her large-scale tree drawings and reveal the kinships that have shaped her artmaking. Through demonstrations, conversations, and play, you’ll learn how to build up rich layers of marks, textures and colour.
You’ll also get to try Rochelle’s bark dyes—natural colour made from fallen bark—and experiment with high-quality materials including pencils, ArtGraf, and Winsor & Newton gouache paints and watercolour brushes. Throughout the day, you’ll build a process journal of drawing techniques, starting with intuitive exercises like frottage, shadow work, shape play, and contour drawing.
After a shared lunch break, we’ll shift into a more focused creative session, combining what you've discovered into one larger, personal artwork on beautiful 300gsm art paper to take home. This time will be spent on ideas, personal design and a more finished piece.
This workshop is perfect for those curious about drawing, natural materials, and connecting with landscape in a meaningful, hands-on way. With a small group size and Rochelle’s warm, supportive guidance, this is a wonderful opportunity to develop your skills and your kinship with the natural world.
