Being Trauma–Informed in Practice | 3-part online workshop

This 3-part online workshop, facilitated by Dr. Nicola Atwool, will help participants develop a strong trauma-informed practice.  The first two sessions will provide a combination of information sharing and small group activities to allow a focus on implications for participants’ own practice.  The third session will take place 2 weeks after the first two sessions and will begin with feedback from participants about their experience of implementing trauma-informed practice.  Challenges and barriers will be discussed and participants will have the opportunity to develop strategies to support implementation.


Part 1 - Thursday 24 November 2022 9am-12:30pm

  • Skills to support trauma-informed practice

Part 2 - Friday 25 November 2022 9am-12pm (may finish earlier)

  • Self care
  • Trauma-informed organisations and systems

Part 1 and 2 will include a 15 minute wellbeing break.

Part 3 Follow-up session - Thursday 8 December 2022 9am-10:30am

  • Challenges of implementing trauma-informed practice
  • Strategies to support implementation


Dr. Nicola Atwool is an Associate Professor in the Social and Community Work Programme at the University of Otago.

Nicola has professional qualifications in social work and child psychotherapy. During her career she has worked for what is now Oranga Tamariki and as principal advisor for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner.

She completed a PhD in 2008 exploring the use of attachment assessments in decision-making for children in care.

Nicola sees the goal of her research as to influence policy and practice to improve outcomes for children and young people exposed to adversity. Her extensive practitioner experience enables her to bridge the worlds of academia, policy and practice.

Cancellations must be notified in writing by email to more than 7 days prior to the workshop. No refund will be given for registration cancellations (including “no shows” at the workshop) but registrations can be transferred to another colleague in your organisation at any time prior to the workshop by contacting Registration cancellations or transfers received less than 7 days prior to the workshop will be charged an administration fee of $20.
