Event description

This special drum class fundraiser invites you to participate in the building of new facilities for early childhood education and development in Kabala, Mali (West Africa). This campaign aims to support families and there communities in a region of West Africa that has been critically affected by conditions of war persisting since 2012 due to a complex convergence of international interests in the extraordinary mineral wealth of the sub-Sahel. This situation continues to severely limit the movements and wellbeing of populations across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Local Malian elder and cultural custodian of the Bamana traditions, Mady Keita (Super Mande Percussion), has recently returned to Victoria from a visit to his homeland. During his stay there, he began a campaign to build a kindergarten on land he had formerly intended to be for the private use of his family in a region called Kabala. His intent is to contribute to the ongoing education of young ones and the stability of families and communities in the greater Bamako region. Here is a video outlining the project's proposal.

You can find more information from visiting the campaign's Go Fund Me appeal: https://www.gofundme.com/f/bui....100% of the proceeds of this class will go towards supporting this campaign. During the class we will be learning a traditional rhythm and song from Mali. Everyone is welcome to join in on this community gesture of support to the people of Kabala. No prior experience is necessary. All drums will be provided.
