'Harmony Amidst Destruction'
Event description
‘Harmony Amidst Destruction’ is a tribute to the big blast that shook the Port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, which signalled the demise of hope for many Lebanese.
In this trailblazing collusion of storytelling and breakdance, two Middle Eastern dancers –Roj and Ralph Kabalan– explore hardship and hope. Through music and movement, they speak of witnessing war and peril, of having to leave their families in crisis to try to find a better future in Australia and of how, through it all, art never left their side, creating and pushing themselves to improve even in the worst of times.
With over 15 years of experience, brothers Roj and Ralph have dedicated their lives to the art of breaking. Starting their journey on the same day, they have cultivated a profound passion for hip-hop culture, which has driven them to travel extensively across the Middle East and Europe. Their adventures have not only enriched their skills but also deepened their understanding of the global dance community. As seasoned competitors, they have showcased their talent in numerous battles, consistently pushing the boundaries of their craft. Beyond performing, Ralph and Roj are committed to sports and fitness, actively engaging in teaching and inspiring the youth. They believe in the transformative power of dance and strive to teach creativity and discipline to the next generation.
The show will feature a live performance by multi-instrumentalist Greta Kelly on shah kaman (Persian spike-fiddle), violin and theremini with live looping, and a support set by Persian mystical-electronic duo, Zemzemeh (Siyavash Doostkhah & Greta Kelly), who juxtapose ancient acoustic music with electronica, exploring the mystical music and poetry of Iran and its integration in all aspects of life. For this occasion, they have crafted a special hiphop set that unapologetically dives into the harsh realities of oppression, resistance, and survival.
Presented in partnership with VENTspace.
