Bendigo Sustainable House Day - Behind the Scenes of Libraries on Candlewood

Join us for our first Bendigo Sustainable House Day event of 2026 and discover how Bradley has transformed an ordinary suburban block in Strathfieldsaye into an inspiring example of sustainable living, food growing, resourcefulness, and community connection.

This 22-year-old family home shows what’s possible when you make the most of the space you have. Bradley will share how he manages his 10 street libraries, heaps of garden beds, compost system, chickens, solar and battery, rainwater harvesting and much more, all within a suburban block of just 700 m².

With more than 10 water tanks capturing around 14,000 litres of rainwater, the property produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables, while reclaimed materials have been given new life in garden beds, wicking beds and other DIY projects.

The nature strip has been upcycled into a vibrant community space, with street libraries offering books, games, puzzles and toys, as well as plants and seeds. A ‘help yourself’ edible verge garden invites passers-by to indulge.
