Beyond Jazz Weekender presents... ZooBop, Reimagined, Royal Ramblers, DJ Morry (Somethin' Else)
Event description
Enjoy three of Gumbaynggirr Country's finest and most innovative exponents of jazz, live at the Memorial Hall and rear deck on Saturday 12th October.
This is the first event in a series of gigs leading up to the Beyond Jazz Weekender, 15-17 August 2025, heralding a new era, in this region, for live jazz and all its associated genres.
Join us from 6pm on the back deck as DJ Morry, host of Somethin' Else on 2BBB FM, spins classic jazz tunes from his extensive vinyl collection, while enjoying a drink from our fully licensed bar.
Stepping up at 7pm are the New Orleans second line-inspired Royal Ramblers, primed to take you on a wonderful jazz journey that only the very finest local musicians can create together: Brett Iggulden on trumpet, clarinetist Geoff Speed, Emiliano Beltzer on guitar, Chris Frater blowing the sousaphone and Pete Skelton on marching drum and percussion instruments. Start dancing on the back deck, then follow the band as they lead you into the main auditorium for a rousing crescendo.
From 8pm, we welcome Reimagined - a quintet presenting original 're-imaginings' of well-loved Beatles songs in an exciting format featuring improvisation by some this region's new generation of musicians. Placing the masterful lyricism and songwriting of Lennon, McCartney & Harrison in a totally new context, Reimagined incorporate explorations of complex rhythms and elements of jazz harmony, inviting the audience to appreciate the beauty of the original songs in a new light. Featuring Louise Gore (piano/arranging), Oscar Eager (trumpet), Memo Beltzer (bass), Otis Narbutas (drums) and Lillie O'Rourke (voice).
Bringing the party from 9pm, Zoobop is all about the groove, energy and expression that flows from each member's passion and proficiency. Georgie Chorley on trumpet, Chris Frater on sax, Pablo Blitzer on keys, Memo Beltzer on double bass and Phil Stitt on drums. Regulars on the local scene, Zoobop has created a reputation for vibe and dynamism. A classic 2 horn frontline has plenty of punch, matched by a powerhouse rhythm section driving the music along. Expect a mix of upbeat instrumental stylings borrowed from world music, funk and fusion. And expect to dance.
