Beyond the Municipal Boundaries: The Birth of Greater Brisbane City Council
Event description
Join us for a fascinating history talk with Andrew Darbyshire from the Brisbane History Group Research Library as we explore a bold experiment that shaped modern Brisbane - the creation of the ‘Greater’ Brisbane City Council.
2025 marks 100 years since the first sitting of the Greater Brisbane City Council, a transformative moment in local governance that extended Brisbane’s reach far beyond its former town limits.
In his talk, ‘Beyond the Municipal Boundaries’, Andrew will look at how Brisbane’s suburbs came under local government rule, with a special focus on the Shire of Taringa. As one of 20 authorities merged into the Greater Brisbane City Council in 1925, Taringa’s story highlights the complexities – and occasional turbulence – of this major shift.
What can you expect?
- The story behind the creation of local government
- A look at the local experience since 1880
- The ups and downs of municipal expansion
The talk will last for an hour and will be followed by tea, coffee and biscuits
