Family violence is rarely about a single incident. The greatest risks are often found in the patterns beneath the surface—patterns of coercive control, intimidation, isolation, fear and cumulative harm that affect adults, children, parenting and family functioning over time.

Practitioners may have the skills to complete a MARAM risk assessment and gather accurate information from the client and other relevant sources—but what happens next?

A critical part of the MARAM process is bringing that information together, applying structured professional judgement and developing a clear rationale for the assessed level of risk. Without this analysis, assessments can become a list of risk factors without clearly explaining the pattern of harm, the risk posed by the person using violence or the actions needed to support safety.
