Event description

Come join us for IRV's first session of Beyond Visibility: Intersectional LGBTIQA+ Disability Training!

Training Overview

Beyond Visibility is a cross-sector, interactive training co-facilitated by LGBTIQA+ people with disability. Grounded in intersectionality, this session supports participants to move beyond inclusion as a checkbox and towards meaningful, rights-based, and transformative practice that supports LGBTIQA+ people with disability.

This training acknowledges that LGBTIQA+, disability and mainstream community organisations often work in parallel—but not always together. Beyond Visibility is designed to bridge that gap by offering shared language, practical tools, and a deeper understanding of how overlapping systems of oppression uniquely shape the lives of LGBTIQA+ people with disability.

Through a mix of discussion, activities, case studies, and reflection, participants will build their capacity to embed inclusive, accessible, and justice-oriented practices in their organisations and communities.

This training pays respect to First Nations practices and sovereignty, and values truth-telling, and invites participants to be open, curious, and accountable. We are all learning together.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will:

  1. Understand intersectionality as a framework for inclusion, with a focus on how gender, sexuality, and disability interact with power.
  2. Identify and reflect on ableism and normativity in their own work and across sector practices.
  3. Explore models of disability, including the social and human rights models, and their relevance to LGBTIQA+ people with disability.
  4. Build confidence in inclusive language and communication, including a deep dive into identity-first vs person-first language, tools to support safe disclosure, and how to identify community-led language developments.
  5. Analyse barriers to access (cultural, physical, attitudinal, and institutional) and begin to identify actions to address them.
  6. Commit to tangible next steps for collaboration, co-design, and community accountability across sectors.
