Event description
Come as you are and leave glowing.
AMANI Yoga is a healing space made for self-identified Black women, Aboriginal women and women of colour. Thank you for honouring this intention.
Hosted by Maria Osman for BGLU, this 90 minute afternoon is a celebration of rest. Settle into guided meditation, let pranayama (the practice of breath) carry you into stillness and sink into restorative and yin yoga with bolsters holding you up. Reflection and connection weave through it all, so you will laugh, exhale and meet women who get it.
Racial stress is heavy. This is your invitation to put it down for a while and feel light again.
No yoga experience needed. Yoga is for everybody and this room is yours.
What to bring
Loose, comfortable clothing so you can melt into every pose
A water bottle
A towel or sarong to cover your bolster (essential)
Your own mat if you love it. Mats and all equipment are provided
Good to know
Skip the perfume and make-up so everyone can breathe easy.
Feeling unwell or have a cold? Please rest at home and join us next time.

Lineup

Maria Osman
Maria Osman founded AMANI Yoga out of a desire to create a culturally inclusive yoga space where Black, Indigenous and women of colour feel safe, belong and experience how yoga can contribute to healing racial stress. The name AMANI means peace in Swahili and best wishes in Arabic. Maria discovered yoga and meditation at a young age. She then built a lifelong career as a campaigner for racial justice and human rights, with a focus on gender equality. That work gave her a deep understanding of how racial stress injury affects the mind, body, spirit and heart. She is a qualified Hatha yoga teacher with further training in Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, the Science of Slow Flow, Restorative Yoga and Meditation. She also holds a Trauma Sensitive Yoga certification (TCTSY) through the Centre for Trauma & Embodiment in the USA. Maria teaches a somatic practice of deep rest that you can take home and use daily, with every posture accessible to all bodies and experience levels. Her sessions explore how racial stress touches the nervous system and how gentle, restorative poses help it settle into calm.
