Bicheno Oz Film Fest 2026

A showcase of some of the best recent Australian & New Zealand films!

The Bicheno Oz Filmfest is a celebration of Australian films - comedy, family, animation, drama and documentaries - something for everyone!

Festival director Sue Maslin will be joined by other filmmakers in presenting an entertaining season of night-time and matinee movie screenings.  Details are below:

Wednesday 18 Feb @ 11:30 AM: THE LOST TIGER

Young Teo, an adopted thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) raised by a family of wrestling kangaroos, embarks on a journey of self-discovery to a lost island, his true home, to find his identity and culture and save his homeland from destruction.

CLOSING FILM - Saturday 21 Feb @ 2:30 PM: JIMPA

A deeply felt drama centered on Hannah, who travels to Amsterdam with her nonbinary teenager, Frances, to visit her gay father, Jim (known affectionately as Jimpa). When Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather, Hannah is forced to re-examine her past, her parenting, and the complex dynamics of her intergenerational queer family.

An estranged TV personality, Chris Masterman, becomes stranded in the Australian Outback near Alice Springs. He forms an unlikely but heartwarming friendship with 12-year-old Indigenous girl, Charlie, as they team up to rescue and rehabilitate injured, orphaned joeys.

Small-time criminal Johnny Francis 'Spit' Spitieri is locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre after flying into Australia on a false passport. Pursued by a gangster and a crooked cop, Johnny navigates comedic misadventures, sharing his unique version of mateship and Australian identity with his fellow detainees.

Sunday 8 Feb @ 2:30 PM: THE CORRESPONDENT

Based on the gripping true story of Australian journalist Peter Greste, who was arrested and accused of terrorism while covering the news in Cairo. The film follows his shocking imprisonment, the global campaign for his release, and his relentless defense of the truth against a brutal, corrupt regime.

Friday 13 Feb @ 6:30 PM: THE SURFER

A man returns to his idyllic childhood beach in Australia, hoping to buy his father's old house and surf the familiar waves with his son. Instead, he becomes thwarted and tormented by a gang of aggressive local surfers who claim ownership of the beach, spiraling him into a tense and surreal psychological breakdown.

This moving documentary chronicles the epic, continent-traversing journey to fulfill the final wish of Australia's legendary Indigenous actor, David Gulpilil, following his passing. It records his body's repatriation over 3,000 kilometres from South Australia to be buried on his ancestral Homeland in East Arnhem Land.

A poignant, funny, and heartwarming story from Bruce Beresford. A charismatic stage designer, Stephen Seary, returns to his small Australian hometown to say goodbye to his dying mother. His quick trip descends into chaos as he confronts his difficult relationship with his father, family responsibilities, and past relationships.

Sunday 15 Feb @ 2:30 PM: OCEAN with DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

Narrated by David Attenborough, this spectacular documentary takes viewers on a breathtaking journey to explore the vital importance of the Earth's oceans and the increasing threats they face. The film highlights the wonder of life under the sea and shares an optimistic message of how the ocean can recover.
