In celebration of the Multicultural Queensland Month (August 2024), ECCQ, True and Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre recognise the vital roles of bilingual and bicultural workers in the health and community care sector. This event offers tailored professional training through workshops for bilingual/bicultural workers, designed to provide opportunities for participants to understand self-care and manage the mental wellbeing of both clients and the workforce. Additionally, the training will cover the potential risks associated with providing language support services and strategies for effectively managing these risks.

Workshop# 1 - part 1 

  • Topic: Trauma-Informed Approach: Navigating Difficult Conversations in a Diverse Workforce 
  • Facilitator: Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre 
  • This session is tailored for bilingual and bicultural professionals working in health and community care settings. Participants will delve into the principles of trauma-informed care and gain practical techniques for managing difficult conversations within diverse teams. The workshop will emphasise understanding the unique challenges faced by a multicultural workforce and provide strategies to foster a supportive and empathetic work environment. Through interactive discussions and role-playing exercises, participants will develop skills to handle sensitive dialogues with cultural competence and confidence, enhancing team cohesion and client care.

  • Topic: Mental Health and Wellbeing: Self-Reflective and Self-Care Practices
  • Facilitator: Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre 
  • This session is designed for bilingual and bicultural professionals working in health and community care settings. It will explore essential aspects of mental health, with a strong emphasis on self-reflective and self-care practices tailored to the unique challenges faced by a diverse workforce. Participants will learn techniques to enhance their mental wellbeing, focusing on strategies to incorporate self-reflection and self-care into their daily routines. The workshop will provide practical tools and insights to help individuals understand their mental health needs, develop resilience, and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Through guided activities and discussions, attendees will gain valuable skills to support their mental health and overall wellbeing.

Workshop# 2 

  • Topic: Is 'language support' the same as 'interpreting': Issues to consider to optimise your bilingual assistance to CaLD community members. 
  • Facilitator: Patricia Argüello de Avila 
  • This session will focus on the critical boundaries between interpreting and language support and the professional ethics involved when assisting a CaLD client bilingually. Participants will explore various considerations to better understand the benefits and risks involved in delivering their service in a safe manner.
