Biofilter (Raingarden) Maintenance Training
Event description
Learn about the science and function of biofilters, including raingardens, and be guided through the application of Water Sensitive SA’s Inspection and Maintenance Guidelines – Biofilters, before putting it all into practice undertaking a field assessment of raingardens in the Marion area.
Learning objective
To assist participants build their capacity for maintaining biofilters (raingardens) to optimise water quality outcomes, essential ecosystems service provision, amenity enhancement and public space integration.

Functional components of biofilters
Form and function of biofilters
Plant selection and function
The problems with sediment
Maintenance – theory
Maintenance planning tasks
Routine inspections using Water Sensitive SA guidelines and condition assessment tools, and e-forms
Participant exercise: Biofilter media
Review of the industry standard for SA and opportunity to inspect and apply water to common media types.
Maintenance - practical
Field application of the inspection and maintenance forms: · Inspect a range of raingardens within walking distance.
