Event description

This interactive workshop contains brand new resources for Biology teachers, helping them to analyse the 2024 exam and best prepare their students for the 2025 HSC.Ā 

In this workshop, teachers will:

  • leverage 2024 RAP Analyses to benefit Biology teaching and learning
  • scrutinise the 2024 exam for emerging themes and commonplace mistakes by students
  • translate the language and stimuliĀ within questions into Biology concepts
  • pilot mark brand new bespoke questions and sample answers
  • unpack and attempt a brand new 7-9 mark question
  • identify strategies for cross-module questions
  • collaboratively develop an exam-style question with marking criteria and exemplar answer

All teachers will walk away with a variety of resources to assist their students in their forthcoming exams.Ā Also, all attendees will receive our bespoke RAP Analysis Spreadsheet upon registration to use for their own exam analysisĀ meetings at school.


NESA Accreditation

CompletingĀ Preparing for the HSC Biology ExamĀ will contributeĀ 5 hoursĀ of NSWĀ Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area ofĀ DeliveryĀ and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning FrameworkĀ addressingĀ standard descriptorsĀ 1.1.2 andĀ 2.1.2Ā from the Australian Professional Standards forĀ Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Workshop Delivered by Els van Zwieten

Els van Zwieten is a highly experienced Biology teacher and provider ofĀ Biology professional learning. She was Chief Examiner of HSC Biology for 5Ā years from 2018 until 2022 and served on numerous other NESA HSCĀ Biology examination committees. She has also served as an HSC BiologyĀ marker and judge marker. Els holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and aĀ Diploma of Education (Distinction). Prior to dedicating the last 25 years toĀ science education in various NSW schools she worked as a biochemist for 20Ā years. With CrookED Science,Ā Els is now leveraging her extensive experience in science, education andĀ assessment to conduct professional development workshops for teachers andĀ student tutorials and workshops. She is passionate aboutĀ science education and inspiring teachers and students. ā€‹
