Bird Detectives - A Huntly Adventure

Join us at a hidden gem in Huntly for a morning of birdwatching and nature exploration with the fabulous Nicole Howie (from Northern Bendigo Landcare). We'll head out to spot real birds in their local habitat, as well as some laminated species we can be sure to see. We'll sharpen our observation skills, and get curious about how different birds are built for the way they live.

There'll be a story to set the scene, along with some hands-on activities to bring the morning to life.

Our timing is no accident — this event falls on the eve of the Aussie Bird Count, running 19 to 25 October. It's a week-long citizen science event where you spend 20 minutes a day recording the birds that visit your place. Come along and build your birdwatching skills and confidence, ready to take part!

To join the Bird Count, register as a counter at aussiebirdcount.org.au and download the free app to help you identify and log what you see.

At this event remember to dress for the outdoors, bring binoculars if you have some and come ready to explore — perfect for curious kids and their grown-ups.

Things to keep in mind...

• There are no toilets at the site. The closest public toilets are in Huntly town centre or at White Hills Botanic Gardens.

• We'll be at a wetland, so mosquito repellent would be a good idea. And, as usual, bring water, wear suitable shoes and leave your pets at home.

• If you've never been to one of our gatherings before, they are for children with their responsible adult.

• When you book, to help us with numbers, please book a separate spot for everyone in your group.
