Bird Sketching and Drawing Workshop
Event description
*Important* Drawings will be kept at the end of the workshop*
Attendees: Local children aged 9-12
Join us for a fun and creative bird sketching and drawing workshop where local children can actively
contribute to the public artwork Where Song Began by Sydney artist Nuha Saad. This special program is
an opportunity for young artists to connect with the natural world around them and leave their mark
on a community project that celebrates local birdlife!
What’s Happening at the Workshop?
We’ll begin with a special talk from a Local Aboriginal Elder, who will share the cultural significance of birds
to the local Wangal people and to First Nations communities more broadly. It’s an amazing opportunity to
learn how birds connect to the land and culture.
Next, Sydney artist Mimi Tong will guide participants through a hands-on drawing workshop. Children will
have the chance to sketch native birds using provided reference images, while also exploring how different
cultures represent birds in their art. With support from Nuha Saad, the children will be encouraged to
create their own interpretations.
What’s the Outcome?
By the end of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of how birds are an important
part of Aboriginal culture and our local community. Through this creative process, they’ll also gain skills
in storytelling through images. Plus, the best part: the children’s sketches may become part of the final
artwork at Park Road Homebush and could also be displayed in a group exhibition at Strathfield Library!
