Birds, Bats and Bogs of the Fleurieu Peninsula
Description
A rare opportunity to explore privately owned and protected natural areas on the Fleurieu Peninsula near Yundi and learn identification skills from expert bird watchers (both sessions) and bat scientists (evening only). This event is being hosted by members of the Fleurieu Swamps Restoration Network, a collective of landholders who are collaborating to manage and restore critically endangered Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps and related habitats on their properties. Learn about the ecosystem services from swamp birds and bats and how those services support grazing enterprises, market access, and farm resilience.
Tickets can be purchased for either a morning session (7:30am) or an evening session (5:00pm). Ticket holders will be assigned to one of three properties in the vicinity of Yundi for a bird watching walk and tour before gathering at Yundi Nature Conservancy for brunch/supper and a talk from experts around the fire pit. We will discuss the ecosystem services that birds and bats in bogs provide.
Long pants and closed-toed sturdy footwear you don’t mind getting wet and muddy is essential. Wear layers for warmth.
This event is not recommended for young children due to the patience and silence required to observe birds in the wild. Children 8 and over are permitted at parent's discretion.

FAQs
- How fit do I need to be for the walk?
The walk component will take approximately 1.5 hours, at a slow pace, stopping along the way to hear about the ecosystems we pass through and birds spotted along the way. Participants require a basic level of fitness, and should be capable of walking over uneven terrain, and be on your feet for approximately 1.5 hours. The walk is an easy walk and the distance covered is ~1-2km.
- What should I wear?
As we will be outdoors, it is recommended you dress for the forecast weather. It will likely be cold in the early morning/evening so bring warm layers.
It is essential to wear long pants and sturdy closed-toed shoes that you don't mind getting wet and muddy. Some areas may be damp underfoot. Hiking shoes are ideal if you have them, or gumboots if they are comfortable to walk in.
Other items that are recommended are a hat (morning only), layers for warmth and a raincoat (if rain forecast).
Optional items are binoculars, camera, torch (for returning to your car at the evening session).
- Is this event family friendly?
This event is not recommended for young children as we will need to be patient and quiet as we observe birds in the wild, and there will be several talks which may not engage young children. Children's tickets for those 8 years old and above are available at parent's discretion.
- Do I need prior bird watching experience?
No, you don't need to have any experience in bird watching. Expert bird watchers will be in attendance to guide you. This event is for both experienced and novice bird watchers, and anyone with an interest in nature.
- I don't have access to a car - can I still attend?
There is no public transport to Yundi, so a private vehicle is essential. If you know someone else attending, we recommend car pooling. You will also need to drive a short distance after the walk component, to the gathering site at Yundi Nature Conservancy for supper/brunch and an expert talk. A 4WD is not required.
