Birds of the Night — Family Event (Ages 8+)

Join Nearer to Nature and enjoy a special up-close encounter with some birds of the night, including owls. Learn about their unique features, behaviours, and natural beauty. 

After meeting these fascinating birds, we'll head out on a guided night walk through Piney Lakes Reserve in search of wild owls, tawny frogmouths, and the habitats they call home. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for other nocturnal wildlife, including bats, frogs, spiders, and a variety of other creatures that come to life after dark.

This is a unique opportunity to connect with nature, learn about local wildlife, and experience the reserve in a whole new light... or rather, under the stars! ✨

This event is perfect for families with children aged 8 and up.

Babes in arms do not require tickets for this event

Requirements

Wearing enclosed shoes, long pants and long sleeves is recommended. Please bring weather appropriate clothing, a torch and mosquito repellent.

Type of event and expectations

Animal interaction rules apply - This event includes animal interaction. For the safety of the animals, this event is unsuitable for children that cannot sit still when asked, cannot be quiet when asked or struggle to have calm hands. We respectfully request that caregivers intervene if necessary to ensure their child’s behaviour is not negatively impacting the well-being of animals or others.

Outdoor event - This event features a guided outdoor walk focused on observing live animals in their natural habitat. Participants are expected to follow the program facilitator's instructions and show respect throughout the experience. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Due to the nature of the event, there will be moments where silence is required. As such, this event may not be ideal for children who have difficulty remaining quiet for short periods when asked.

Accessibility

This event includes a walk on some uneven ground which may not be suitable for all walking aids.

Accessible parking is available at front of EcoHub, rooms are located on multiple levels via a ramp and toilets are available within the venue. For specific access requirements please feel free to call or email EcoHub at (08)9364 0191 or ecohub@melville.wa.gov.au

Directions to EcoHub
Please consider using public transportation. A bus stop, just a 2-minute walk away, is conveniently located near EcoHub and services multiple routes.

EcoHub is located at 555 Leach Highway, Winthrop in the Piney Lakes Reserve. To reach us, if heading westbound, take the first left after Murdoch Drive on Leach Highway. If coming from the Fremantle area, continue on Leach Hwy across Murdoch Drive and use the designated U-turn just after the lights to move to the westbound lanes. Go back through the lights at Murdoch Drive and take the first left. Please park in the signed public carpark.
