Presented by NGV as part of Melbourne Design Week, come along to this exciting one-day event, celebrating and reflecting the relationship between the Birrarung, meaning ‘River of Mists and Shadows’ (Yarra River), and Abbotsford Convent, which sits on Wurundjeri land.
Featuring a thought-provoking program of events and experiences throughout the day, including Cultural River Walks with Wurundjeri Elder, Uncle Bill Nicholson, a site-specific sound installation from Dylan Martorell, and a reflection on the new Abbotsford Convent Masterplan (2022) from Hassell’s Jeroen Hagendoorn. While you’re here, stay on to enjoy Play On Presents: Lotte Betts-Dean, an electro music take on the classics.

10am-12.30pm – Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country followed by Cultural River Walk.

1.00pm-3pm - Birrarung X Abbotsford Convent: Hassell & Dylan Martorell.
With Dylan Martorell presenting Sonoflora Drift Yarra from 1- 2pm. Location: Rotunda, Heritage Gardens, Abbotsford Convent.
With Jeroen Hagendoorn (Hassell) talk discussing the influence of the Birrarung on the design of the Convent’s new Masterplan (2022) from 2-3pm. Location: The Packing Room
2pm-4pm - Cultural River Walk
With Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson and Thane Garvey. Location: Meet at the Main Gate.
7:30pm - 9.30pm - Play On Present Lotte Betts-Dean and Special Guests + kāmna (DJ set).
