Event description

The Carumba Institute is proud to host the 2025 Showcasing Indigenous Scholarship Seminar Series. This seminar series presents Black academics and Higher degree research students at QUT with an opportunity to showcase research and innovative teaching and learning approaches that encapsulate the engagement and application of Indigenous knowledges. Such knowledges have worked to challenge the Eurocentric domination of curricula and research practice using the mandate of the Indigenous Australian Research Strategy.  Knowledge sharing as a means of reciprocal relations is a key feature of the strategy, and the seminar series affords occasions where this takes place.

To commence the series, we have invited two deadly academics, Mrs Shanelle Fiaalii and Mr Brent McKnoulty, to present on their scholarly and professional practice in Education.

A short Q&A segment will follow the presentations.

Meet the Scholars

Shanelle Fiaalii is a lecturer in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice at QUT. Shanelle teaches in the Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programs. She has been an English and humanities teacher for over 25 years, working in Government and Independent schools in NSW and Queensland.

Shanelle is currently completing her Ed.D., which focuses on investigating the colonial history of Independent Christian schools, exploring English teachers’ attitudes towards Indigenous knowledges and their engagement with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority; and assessing the impact of an on-Country experience on the teachers’ attitudes and engagement.

Brent McKnoulty

Brent McKnoulty is a Gamilaraay man and works in QUT’s Future Students Team as an Education Consultant - Social Inclusion.

Brent is completing his PhD at QUT, which focuses on how Indigenous Knowledges can transform Australian Teacher Education.

We look forward to seeing you there!
