Event description

Dr. James W. Porter, "superstar scientist." will join us again after the Chasing Corals screening to give a talk on “Blurring the Lines between Medicine and Ecology while Saving Coral Reefs in the Florida Keys” at 7:00pm EST in St. Matthews University (Building Leeward 4, Room LH1)

While Climate Change is a threat to coral reefs world-wide, so is water quality. Dr. Porter will describe his discovery of a human pathogen that was being introduced into the coastal zone by undertreated waste water. This bacterium was killing off entire Elkhorn coral reefs in the Florida Keys. By sharing his scientific findings, he was able to get local citizens to vote for infrastructure upgrades that solved this problem. This talk demonstrates that action by local individuals on behalf of the coral reef can greatly improve its chances for survival.
