Body Politics in Troubled Times

Join us for this timely alliance-building and awareness-raising event for feminists and activists interested in gender rights and reproductive justice.

A panel of passionate and engaged speakers will discuss abortion, transgender issues and the rights of First Nations women, girls and gender-diverse peoples. 

The discussion will range from describing the pressing issues facing us locally and beyond, ways to respond to far right attacks, and how to expand our horizons and imagine a just future.

Barbara Baird (she/her) lives and works on unceded Kaurna Yerta. From 1990 until her retirement in 2025 she taught Women's & Gender Studies in universities in Tasmania and SA . Her research concerns the histories and politics of sexuality and reproduction, with a focus on queer issues and abortion, in C20th and C21st Australia. She identifies as an activist academic and since 2017 has been the Co-Convenor of the SA Abortion Action Coalition (saaac). The best thing about being made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2024 was the recognition of abortion activism as a national good!

Kansas Bird (all pronouns) is an intersex transgender lesbian born and raised on Kaurna Yerta. They are a museum academic with a focus on social justice and inclusion in institutions that have historically oppressed minorities. They are also a spokesperson for Trans Justice Adelaide and a fierce advocate for bodily autonomy for all and radical solidarity between seemingly disparate groups. 

Dr Prudence Flowers (she/her) is a Senior Lecturer in US History at Flinders University. Her research focuses on social movements, modern conservatism, and histories of gender, sexuality, and the body. She has a particular interest in historical and contemporary American anti-abortion activism and transnational articulations of 'anti-gender' politics in twenty-first century Australia. She is a member of the SA Abortion Action Coalition.

Chloe Wegener (she/her) is a proud Garrwa woman who works at the Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute for First Nations Gender Justice at ANU,  a national institute advancing the rights, knowledges and leadership of First Nations women, girls and gender-diverse people. She leads monitoring, evaluation and learning and works across strategic communications, knowledge translation and design. Chloe is also a physiotherapist by background, and was the first woman to hold an Indigenous Player Development Manager role in the AFL. She is a practising visual scribe, using visual storytelling to make complex ideas and conversations more engaging and accessible.

Goodwood Books is a feminist bookshop and meeting place located on Kaurna Yerta, the stolen lands of the Kaurna people. We support truth, treaty and reparations.

All proceeds go to supporting local readers and writers, and to causes that fit our mission of supporting reading as a liberatory practice. Our business model is based on sustainable practices and we are deeply immersed in the circular economy.

Our collection is mostly secondhand, with a small but excellent selection of new books, by women, trans* and queer writers.
