Bohemian Reverie: Dvořák's String Quintet in G, Op.77
Event description
As one of the greatest Czech composers, Antonín Dvořák is known for his ability to recreate folk tunes in symphonic form with sparkling melodies and brilliant orchestration. Such is the case with his String Quintet No. 2 in G, dedicated with the motto: "For my nation". Composed during one of the composer's highly prolific periods, this quintet won the prize of a chamber music competition sponsored by the Prague organisation, the Artistic Circle, and was praised by the jury for its "distinction of theme, technical skill in polyphonic composition, and mastery of form". Titled Allegro con fuoco, the first movement is full of liveliness, driven by the underlying triplet motif. The Scherzo which follows is likewise buoyant, and is contrasted by the central Trio. In the Poco andante,Dvořák showcases the great lyricism he would later become known for in his slow movements. This sweetness continues into the Finale, which culminates in a boisterous and joyous end. The quintet will shortly be travelling to China at the end of May to participate in the Tianjin Julliard Orchestral Symposium, where they will be performing this work to fellow musicians and international peers.
