Bonsai a Loving Art Form

Join members of the Otago Bonsai Society to learn about Bonsai. They will provide a demonstration on how to start a tree from nursey stock on its Bonsai journey. As a Bonsai is never finished, it is a living growing tree, so they will also show how to continue with the development of a tree and its ongoing care.

Bonsai embodies a harmony between artistic interpretation and the character of the tree.

The Otago Bonsai Society (OBS) exists to promote the art of bonsai throughout the region to support and encourage those who wish to pursue the art form. We come together to share techniques, hone our craft, to admire beautiful trees, and provide help to all who come along. The society also holds workshops and hosts guest demonstrators from time to time to grow our knowledge and skills.

OBS meet monthly, on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, except our Winter Series in June, July, and August, which are held at 1.00pm on the first Sunday of these months. Meetings are held at Mercy Hall, 42 Macandrew Road South, Dunedin. Beginners are more than welcome to come along, ask questions and view the trees on display.

Bonsai embodies a harmony between artistic interpretation and the character of the tree. As a living art form, it must take into account aesthetic principles such as balance, harmony, perspective, and composition, while considering the character of the tree and its horticultural requirements.

Your bonsai will grow and change with the seasons. As such it is never finished and you will have a treasure for a long time that will require care and attention throughout the year. Membership of the OBS will provide advice as to how to continue with the development of your tree and its ongoing care.
