Book Launch: Clever Men by Martin Thomas
Event description
Join us on Saturday 21 June for the launch of Clever Men: How worlds collided on the scientific expedition to Arnhem Land of 1948 by award-winning historian Martin Thomas.
In this compelling new account, Martin reveals what really happened when Charles Mountford led a quarrelsome team of scientists to explore traditional Aboriginal life in Arnhem Land in 1948.
Clever Men uncovers the secrets, scandals, and surprising successes of the expedition, revealing how Aboriginal communities, including the revered ‘clever men’, responded to the arrival of foreign ‘experts’.
Based on years of research and collaboration with Arnhem Land communities, Clever Men is a poignant portrayal of colliding worlds.
This special event will include introductions by linguistic anthropologist Murray Garde and historian Don Christophersen and stunning photographs that give a behind-the-scenes glimpse of both the book and the expedition itself.
Books will be available to purchase at the event courtesy of The Bookshop Darwin.
