Event description

Book Launch: Race and the question of Palestine

A conversation with Lana Tatour, Randa Abdel-Fattah and Paula Abood

Join us in this important event to discuss the newly released book Race and the Question of Palestine (coedited by Lana Tatour and Ronit Lentin, Stanford University Press, 2025).

The book 'Race and the Question of Palestine' explores how race operates as a technology of power and colonial rule, a political and economic structure, a set of legal and discursive practices, and a classificatory system. It maintains the colonization of Palestine cannot be understood outside the grammar of race, and it stresses the importance of locating Palestine within global histories and present politics of imperialism, settler colonialism, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy.

Lana Tatour will be in-conversation with Randa Abdel-Fattah, Paula Abood and Ahmed Abadla. They will discuss Israel’s genocide in Gaza, anti-Palestinian racism and the dehumanization of Palestinians, the tradition of theorizing race in Palestine studies, race and international law, and more:

Lana Tatour is a Senior Lecturer in Global Development at the University of New South Wales. She is a scholar of settler colonialism, indigeneity, race, and citizenship, with a focus on Palestine. Lana is also a public commentator.

Randa Abdel-Fattah is an ARC Future Fellow at Macquarie University. Dr Abdel-Fattah is also a former lawyer and the award-winning author of twelve books for children and young adults, which have been translated into over thirteen languages. Her most recent book is Discipline.

Ahmed Abadla is a Palestinian from Gaza. He is the co-founder of 'Palestine Justice Movement Sydney' and host of the Palestinian podcast 'Red Inverted Triangle' and 'Pulse of Palestine' radio show.

Paula Abood is a cultural worker and educator, writer and creative producer. She is a recipient of Creative Australia’s Ros Bower Award (2013) for lifetime achievement in community arts and cultural development practice, director of The Third Space and a Community Ambassador for the Sydney Biennale 2026.
