Book Party - Pursuing Morality
Event description
Book Party - Pursuing Morality: Buddhism and everyday ethics in Southeastern Myanmar
In this book launch party, Justine Chambers will introduce her in-depth and fascinating study of everyday moral contestation in Myanmar’s southeast, Pursuing Morality: Buddhism and Everyday Ethics in Southeastern Myanmar (2024, NUS Press). Based on extensive in-depth fieldwork in the small city of Hpa-an, the capital of Karen State, the book shines new light on Pwo Karen Buddhists' lives in an area of the world that has long been defined by conflict and violence.
In addition, Associate Professor Nick Cheesman (ANU) and Associate Professor Jane Ferguson (ANU) will comment on the book and its contribution to understandings of Myanmar and the Karen.
Justine Chambers holds a PhD in Anthropology from the Australian National University (ANU) and is now a post-doctoral researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS).
The discussion will be followed by light refreshments.
