Description

Join us at Books@Stones on Thursday 19 November (6:30pm) for the launch of Seagull Speaking: From One Soldier to Another by C.J. Whiteman, who will be in-conversation with Mal Rerden

Seagull Speaking: From One Soldier to Another is a candid and practical guide to military life in the Australian Army. Drawing on over twenty-five years of service, Whiteman weaves memoir, guidance, and honest reflections from soldiers and their families, tracing the journey from enlistment through to life after uniform. The book demystifies training, culture, administration, deployments, and the challenges faced by those who serve. Through humour, sharp observation, and real stories, Whiteman explores resilience, leadership, ethics, and the bonds of mateship. Both a tribute to soldiers and a valuable resource for anyone considering serving or supporting service, this book blends experience, insight, and warmth, offering a unique window into the realities and rewards of Army life in Australia.

Craig J. Whiteman retired from the Regular Army at the rank of Major in November 2004, transitioning to the private sector while continuing to serve in the Army Reserve. He is presently the Secretary of the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) Association and a Legatee with Legacy Brisbane. Establishing himself as an author, this is his debut book on Army life. He lives in Brisbane with his wife, Suzy and enjoys travel, art and golf.

Mal Rerden served in the Australian Regular Army for 37 years in the Infantry in a range of regimental and staff positions, retiring in July 2013.  He served on operations in Bougainville, the Middle East and East Timor where he was the Commander of the International Stabilisation Force in 2006/07.  He met Craig Whiteman whilst volunteering as a Legatee with Legacy Brisbane.  Mal is an occasional shop assistant at Books@Stones.
