Botanical Cold Process Soap Making Workshop

Do you love scented soaps? Have you always wanted to learn how soap is made? Learn how to craft your own bars of all natural soap using the cold process method! Cold Process is the method of making soap from raw ingredients like shea butter, oil, and lye. You will be instructed in the basic chemical process, saponification, safety tips and practices, proper handling of lye, and how to customize your soap batter with color and fragrance. ​​This class is taught by a professional soap maker who has many years of experience making cold process soap. This is a great class for individuals who are interested in learning how to make their own soap from scratch, whether for a hobby or as inspiration to start a business. Each participant will go home with a loaf of custom scented soaps decorated with natural botanicals.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS

This class is available to take In Person at our Montclair NJ Shop, or online Virtually on Zoom. For the Virtual class participants can opt to take the class with a DIY Kit or choose to receive a shopping list.

IN PERSON CLASS

If a participant chooses to take the class In Person, then they are taking the class at our shop located at 547 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair NJ. For In Person Classes, materials will be provided at the shop.

VIRTUAL CLASS

If a participant chooses to take the class Virtually, they will receive a Zoom link. For Virtual Classes a participant can choose to receive a DIY Kit or a Shopping List.

To receive your DIY Kit in a timely manner, register at least a week or earlier in advance to reserve your materials for shipping or local curbside pick up. Please provide your shipping address when registering.

DIY Kit includes premeasured ingredients, botanicals, mica colorant, goggles, gloves.

Participants will need will need to supply their own Soap Making Lye. You will be provided with the lye specifications upon registering. Participants will also need microwave safe bowls and measuring cups, a stick blender, long handled plastic spoons & spatula, a kitchen thermometer, a disposable plastic container, a heavy duty plastic container or bucket, a kitchen scale, a face mask, and a plastic container with a lid or a silicone soap mold. Any and all utensils and containers used for soap making can ONLY be used for soap making and cannot be reused for food prep or other purposes.

IMPORTAINT: Lye (sodium hydroxide) and/or caustic potash (potassium hydroxide) may be harmful or fatal if swallowed or comes in contact with eyes or skin, so handle with care and caution. Avoid using when children and pets are present. Do NOT use utensils that you intend to use for food. Do NOT use aluminum or glass containers. Always work in a ventilated area, where gloves, wear goggles, and wear long sleeves when working with lye.

Participants who register for a Virtual class with a Shopping List will be emailed a list of materials, utensils, appliances, and other items needed to participate in the workshop. Participants are responsible for sourcing their materials in time for class. Participants are welcome to contact us for recommendations as to where they can source their materials.

APPROPRIATE AGES FOR PARTICIPATION

Participants must be at least 16 years old and can work independently. If a participant needs a caretaker or parent to assist with the project the assisting person does not need a ticket.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

This is a Live event. In Person and Virtual Class Participants must attend on the scheduled date and time of the class in order to partake. There is no recorded session available for replay. If an In Person Participant is unable to attend the class in Person they can request to join the class Virtually and we can arrange accommodations. If a Virtual Class participant is unable to log onto a class on the day and time it is scheduled then it is the participant’s responsibility to contact us prior to the event for accommodations. If a participant is unable to join and needs to reschedule, there is a rescheduling fee that will be billed to the participant. If we as the organizers need to reschedule an event there is no rescheduling fee, and participants will be notified of any changes.

INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL PARTICIPATION

If you live outside of the United States there is an additional fee to ship DIY kits. Participants are responsible for any duty fees, customs fees, or any additional fees associated with receiving their DIY Kits. If a participant chooses to get a DIY Kit it is the participant’s responsibility to make sure their country can receive packages from the US.
